Chapter Five

The night seemed to be colder at the docks. Yet it was not only the cold air that made the hairs on my pale arm rise. It was far less peaceful than farther in-land where I had left my soft, warm pillow and the comfort of my home. If I had never left my home all my life, I would be a happier person. I would be protected from the knowledge of poverty and war that kept me awake at night. But my sadness was no where near the suffering that many have endured.

I did not know what my plan was. I hoped to board a ship with no one watching and sail the seas unnoticed. I hoped it would make me a braver person. But this was a childish goal, even to the very adventurous me.

Drops of rain now started to drop onto the frock which I had carefully chosen for this most exciting venture. I felt it would be the most likely to blend in with the common dress of the people at the docks.

I could have become lost in thought in that very dark place. If it weren't for someone yelling furiously. I assumed it was to me that he directed his voice, as his words fiercely sounded: "Young woman! Home with you!"
I started to run in the direction away from the voice. I did not know where I should go, I only wished to go unnoticed or my exciting trip would come to a very boring end. I was determined that my life would also  fall into a never-ending dull conclusion if I did not embark on this journey to sea.

However, my shoes and dress were far from fitting for such a run. It was not long before I fell to my face. The docks were not close to as dark as the world became to me in those moments, but the silence my ears fell upon were oh so blissful.
