Chapter Four

Without a word, I set the note down beside my father's hand. I took a seat at the breakfast table. He took a quick glance at the paper and then looked up at me with his eyes that more often than not, reflected his sad state of mind. I could visualise the many questions that were most certainly nagging at his wise mind. I did nothing but wait for him to read my written words.

I had asked my father for something I knew would be difficult for him to give to me. Only then I would accept Neil Carter as my husband. My request was this, that I board a ship travelling far and distant. It was a request for an adventure of my dreams. Without it, I would not agree to become a woman and marry.

He seemed to read my words over and over. His handsomely ageing face reflected his utter disapproval. My heart sank. I did not want it to come to this and I had no choice. However, I waited for my father to give me his answer.

His answer, was of course, stern and once and for all time, "A ship is no place for a woman. And certainly not for a woman of your class."
He felt it a childish request. I was to do as he wished. Marry Neil Carter without further a-do. I, however, had plans contrary to this. And I could not hold back from carrying them out.
